WRESTLING: Waverly flexes muscles to win own dual meet From staff reports www.pressconnects.com The Waverly wrestling team made an early statement that it won't give up its small-school state team title easily, routing state power Spencerport, 48-22, in the Waverly Duals on Saturday. The Wolverines, the reigning New York State Sports Writers Association small-school state champions, went 3-0 in the five-team tournament, also defeating Rush Henrietta and Windsor. But without a doubt its most impressive victory came against Spencerport, which has won three of the last five large-school state team titles and has finished no worse than fourth in the state over the last 15 years. The turning point came during the 152-pound match. With Waverly leading 15-12, Spencerport's Chris Vigliotti was disqualified late in the third period while leading after slamming Waverly's Chris Nocchi while out of bounds. Instead of at worst a 15-all tie, Waverly took a 21-12 lead. Colin McDonald followed with a technical fall over Rob Bard (15-0) at 160 and Casey McDonald pinned Bryan Bourne in 4:50 at 171, the McDonalds' victories starting a closing stretch of six victories over the final eight matches. "We were going into the heart of our team, so we felt pretty good" Waverly coach Jim McCloe said of the match following Vigliotti's disqualification. "And of course the strength of our team starts with the McDonalds. "I didn't quite expect this, but this win is real sweet."
