(August 1, 2006) — Bryan Bourne arrived from North Dakota last weekend with an accomplishment no wrestler his age from Rochester has ever matched.

Bourne, a Spencerport junior, is a cadet national champion.

He won the freestyle 160-pound division tournament at the Cadet & Junior National Championships in Fargo.

It's believed that no wrestler from the Rochester area before Bourne has won a cadet or 15-16-year-old national championship at the event in North Dakota.

"It's kind of hard to take in all at once," Bourne said during a family vacation near Keuka Lake. "It's something that I've worked a long time for, and it's hard to believe I did it.

"I'm really proud."

Bourne, a third-place finisher at the 2006 state high school tournament, was one of 62 wrestlers in that cadet freestyle weight class tournament.

He won 10 matches, including a pin of Iowa's Grant Gambrall, ranked fourth in USA Wrestling's national freshman and sophomore rankings.

"He wrestled incredibly well," New York state freestyle wrestler and Webster Thomas coach Neil Cook said. "I'm not surprised that he did it, I knew it in training camp.

"He's an impressive athlete, a hard worker, who's well-coached by Bill Jacoutot. He turns that switch and gets after it."
