H.S. wrestling; Spencerport pins down ‘AA' championship

(February 15, 2004) — WEBSTER — Spencerport had six different champions as it earned its 16th wrestling team title in 17 years at the Section V Class AA championship meet at Webster Schroeder on Saturday.

Alex Baxter defended his sectional title at 189 pounds by decisioning Mike Hall (Brockport) 6-3. Mike Terenzi, who lost in last year’s sectional final, edged Irondequoit’s Albert Gianforti 1-1 in overtime criteria for the Rangers.

Webster Schroeder’s Gregor Gillespie won his fourth sectional title by decisioning James Clark (Irondequoit) 9-5 at 135 pounds. Gillespie, a junior, is a defending state champion and has won 83 consecutive matches.

Gillespie hasn’t lost a match since his freshman year when he lost the state finals.

at Canandaigua

Canandaigua’s Trevor Chinn won his fifth sectional title with a technical fall over Eliran Fischer (Brighton) in 4:58.

Chinn, a defending state champion, is 36-0 this season and is ranked No. 2 in the nation by USA Wrestling magazine.

“I had a talk with my coaches before sectionals and, I don’t want to sound like I’m bragging, but they said I should pretty much handle sectionals,” Chinn said.

“They said my goal should be to either have a technical fall or a pin fall in every match.”

Chinn finished the tournament with two pins and two technical falls.

Wayne won the team title with five individual champions.
