Staff Reports

(February 23, 2008) — Bryan Bourne, a 2007 All-Greater Rochester selection, leads a pack of 11 Spencerport wrestlers who advanced to the semifinals of the Section V state qualifier on Friday at RIT's Gordon Field House.

The Rangers, the state's top-ranked large-school team, had more wrestlers advance than any other school.

Bourne advanced into today's final rounds, pinning teammate John Tronia in 1:02 at 160 pounds.

Teammate Nick Terenzi, who captured his second straight Class AA title last weekend, also advanced in the 130 weight class.

The Division I 119 weight class will feature two 2007 All-Greater Rochester selections who have moved up weight classes — Greece Athena's Alex Marianetti, who wrestled at 103 last season, and Brighton's Zach Ellis, who wrestled at 112.

In the Division II brackets, Ian Paddock of Warsaw, 2007 All-Greater Rochester small-school wrestler of the year, advanced. Paddock, who is wrestling at 130 pounds this year, won a state championship at 119 last winter.

Fellow state champ Alex Ekstrom of Palmyra-Macedon also advanced, pinning both of his first-round opponents. Ekstrom also moved up two weight classes, wrestling at 135.

Ekstrom's teammate, reigning 103-pound state champ Tyler Marlow, advanced at 112, defeating Geneseo's Tyler Carman by technical fall and pinning John Vanslyke of York in 36 seconds.

Sophomore Bobby Dierna of Wayne, who advanced to last year's state tournament, pinned Penfield's Nick Cegelski in 1:02 at 96 pounds. The Eagles send eight wrestlers into today's final rounds.
