FAIRPORT - This is the serious portion of the high school wrestling season, something Brendan Dwyer has a grasp of.

Paul Morabito, top, of Spencerport High School wrestles Sean Grove of Rush-Henrietta during the 2009 Class AA Wrestling Sectionals on Saturday in Fairport. Morabito won the 145-pound division.
Dwyer, a senior at Pittsford Mendon, wants to return to the state championship meet that he was one win away from a top-six finish last year.

His game plan is to qualify as the top 189-pound Division I wrestler in Section V, even though he very well could earn a wild-card berth. And that very well could mean a rematch next weekend with Brockport senior Christian Boley, the only wrestler to defeat Dwyer in 38 matches this winter.

"It is such a pride thing to be the best in your area,'' Dwyer said after winning the Section V Class AA title on Saturday at Fairport. "It's only you out there, no one else (helping you out).

"I'm looking for Christian Boley. I want my redemption. That loss killed me."

Dwyer made sure he stayed on track mentally for a rematch with Boley when he handled Spencerport's Brad Englert, 11-0 in the 189 final to complete a dominant run through the Class AA tournament.

"I have that history,'' Dwyer said after he became a Section V champion for the first time in his varsity career. "I lose my first match (to someone), then comeback and win.

"(Boley) is a very good wrestler. ... People who saw that match say that I can definitely pull it off."

Dwyer led Boley 3-0 in the third period of the Monroe County Tournament final, but lost 4-3 after he was taken down during the final 20 seconds.

Barring an upset, the odds are that Dwyer and Boley will meet again during the SuperSectionals, Section V's qualifier for states, next weekend at Rochester Institute of Technology.

"He really took it as a motivator," Pittsford coach Jason Bovenzi said of Dwyer's loss to Boley. "He probably wasn't sure that he could beat him when he went out there.

"He hadn't been tested, and Christian was a national champion as a junior. All of the top guys (in this weight class) are pretty close (in ability)."

A win over Boley would boost Dwyer's confidence.

"I know I can do it, but I didn't quite do it before," Dwyer said.

Dwyer, like every wrestler who finished in the top six of his weight class at all of the sectional class meets this weekend, earned a spot in the SuperSectional tournaments.

Spencerport once again won the Class AA team title, as the Rangers piled up 325 points. Eleven Spencerport wrestlers advanced to finals. Geoff Brown at 96 pounds, Zak Haas (130), Paul Morabito (145), Nick Baxter (171), Paul Glover (215) and Enzo Zagari (285) won their divisions.

"It's exciting," said Zagari, a junior. "I've been working hard all season; I'm trying to get into the state tournament (for the first time). It's just one of the perks on the trail there.

"A lot of people are counting down the days to see when the season will end. It's a long season, but like our motto says, it's the most exciting time of the season."

Fairport (201), Penfield (173.5), Hilton (140) and Pittsford (137) rounded out the top-five teams.

Pittsford's effort received a boost not only from Dwyer's run through the 189-pound division, but titles won by 125-pounder C.J. Howard, who finished sixth at states last year, and freshman 112-pounder Brady Baron.

Baron (31-7), in his first full varsity season, knocked top-seed James Montante of Penfield out of contention before he beat Spencerport's Mike Piedimonte 4-2 in overtime in the final.

"He took five losses early, probably before mid-December," Bovenzi said. "But he's athletic, a good learner, works hard and makes adjustments.

"That's a very deep, tough weight class. These guys have taken turns beating each other. The more chances he gets at these kids, the more I like his chances. He's definitely a bright spot for our future."
